Released in 1987, Merciful God wasn’t King Sunny Ade’s best album — a simple listen to the title track again after its reworking in the mid-’90s makes that quite apparent. The music isn’t bad, by any means, it simply fails to reach the sparkling standard that typifies much of his catalog. The other disc on this two-fer is better, with “Baba Moke E Po” and “Modomimira” especially worthwhile. There’s some sterling ensemble work and the instruments push each other, with the trademark pedal steel guitar sound sliding through several of the songs in a most effective fashion.
